Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit [through factional motives, or strife], but with [an attitude of] humility [being neither arrogant nor self-righteous], regard others as more important than yourselves. (Philippians 2:3)
Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be raised to honor. (Matthew 23:12)
But He gives us more and more grace [through the power of the Holy Spirit to defy sin and live an obedient life that reflects both our faith and our gratitude for our salvation]. Therefore, it says, GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD and HAUGHTY, BUT [continually] GIVES [the gift of] GRACE TO THE HUMBLE [who turn away from self-righteousness]. (James 4:6)
For by the grace [of God] given to me I say to everyone of you not to think more highly of himself [and of his importance and ability] than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has apportioned to each a degree of faith [and a purpose designed for service]. (Romans 12:3)
The proud look of man and human pride will be humbled, and the loftiness of men will be brought low; the LORD alone will be exalted on that day.
For a day belonging to the LORD of Armies is coming against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up—it will be humbled. (Isaiah 2:11-12)
A virtuous and excellent wife [worthy of honor] is the crown of her husband, But she who shames him [with her foolishness] is like rottenness in his bones. (Proverbs 12:4)
So He said to them, You are the ones who declare yourselves just and upright in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts [your thoughts, your desires, your secrets]; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God. (Luke 16:15)
For not knowing about God’s righteousness [which is based on faith], and seeking to establish their own [righteousness based on works], they did not submit to God’s righteousness. (Romans 10:3)
For I say to you that unless your righteousness (uprightness, moral essence) is more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:20) He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves and were confident that they were righteous [posing outwardly as upright and in right standing with God], and who viewed others with contempt. (Luke 18:9)
They are pure in their own eyes, but they are filthy and unwashed.
A certain kind of person looks around arrogantly and is conceited, those whose eyes are ever so haughty.
They look proudly around, casting disdainful glances. (Proverbs 30:12-13) Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, But a good (encouraging) word makes it glad.
The righteous man is a guide to his neighbor, But the way of the wicked leads them astray. (Proverbs 12:25-26)
Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will silence; The one who has a haughty look and a proud (arrogant) heart I will not tolerate. (Psalm 101:5)
Everyone will be humbled, the eyes of the arrogant humbled, and the eyes of the haughty humbled, the eyes of the prideful humbled and brought low. (Isaiah 5:15)
