And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
(Mark 7:20-23)
A believer, can disregard sanctification altogether. Throughout a believer's walk, the Holy Spirit reveals our sin, areas of weakness, and areas in which we need to grow. “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.” By the work of the Holy Spirit we have been given new life, staying in step with the Holy Spirit.
If we [claim to] live by the [Holy] Spirit, we must also walk by the Spirit [with personal integrity, godly character, and moral courage—our conduct empowered by the Holy Spirit]. (Galatians 5:25) In obedience we pray, read and study God’s Word.
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
(1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
The secret of obedience is the love for the Lord in obeying the Word of the Lord. But the strength of obedience is the Spirit of the Lord. I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor--Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), to be with you forever-- the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive [and take to its heart] because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He (the Holy Spirit) remains with you continually and will be in you.(John 14:16-18) Obedience to the truth has a purifying effect on our souls. We make ourselves clean from from sin by our obedience. God has declared us clean from sin through the blood Jesus shed on calvary.
So that your souls would be sanctified in obedience to the truth and that they be filled with love without partiality, that you would be loving one another from a pure and perfect heart. (1Peter 1:22)
Helping us to live for God is what the Spirit's “sanctifying work” is all about. Sanctification is the process by which we submit our hearts, minds, and bodies to following Jesus.
Sanctify them in the truth [set them apart for Your purposes, make them holy]; Your word is truth. ( John 17:17)
