In chapter 4, Peter urges believer's to be fiercely committed to fulfilling the purpose of our lives in Christ. We have been rescued from meaningless lives and set apart from the world, in order to be used for God's purpose.

For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God. Self-control helps us to resist temptation and avoid conforming to the things of this world. Be sober scripturally means not being caught up with ANY of the lust of the flesh or even the natural affairs of this life that may not necessarily be sin. It also means to be free from the spirit of the world around us—free from what the world is caught up with or focused on.

So, the end of everything is at hand. Therefore, be sensible and be sober for the purpose of prayer.

Everything in the world is about to be wrapped up, so take nothing for granted. Stay wide-awake in prayer.

The Bible defines sober as having a disciplined, controlled, sound mind.Being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Such a person is guided by sound reason and is sane and rational. 1Peter 5:8. In order to be sober, we have to guard our thoughts, cast down imaginations, and think on things that are true. But they will [have to] give an account to Him who is ready to judge and pass sentence on the living and the dead. For this is why the good news [of salvation] was preached [in their lifetimes] even to those who are dead, that though they were judged in the flesh as men are, they may live in the spirit according to [the will and purpose of] God. The end and culmination of all things is near. Therefore, be sound-minded and self-controlled for the purpose of prayer [staying balanced and focused on the things of God so that your communication will be clear, reasonable, specific and pleasing to Him.] (1Peter 4:5-7) If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.

The reality is the world around us is darkened by sin. To refuse to follow him is to continue to walk in darkness.

Once more Jesus addressed the crowd. He said, “I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life. ( John 8:12)

1 John 1:5 means that God is the light of pure goodness, perfect righteousness, and absolute truth. God is light. Fellowship with God is a lifestyle of practicing the truth in words and actions. Walking in the light of truth to describe the person who is truly in fellowship with God.

If, then, we say that we have fellowship with him, yet at the same time live in the darkness, we are lying both in our words and in our actions. (1John 1:6) God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.

This verse says that those who claim Christ, but show no signs of a changed life, are lying.

Then Jesus told them, You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light. (John 12:35-36) We can spread this light by embracing it, by becoming lights ourselves: the lights of the world.

Being salt and light is foundational to who we are. A way of being that gives others a experience of the Kingdom, and draws them in to want more, to seek more of the King. Believer's salt are to be distinct, preserve and penetrate the earth, and as light are to be clear, pure, right, true, guide and protect the world. Our lives are to be an on-going witness to the reality of Christ's presence in our lives.

Jesus said we are “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” You are salt and light in this world. You have been called by God to bring light in the darkness in His beautiful name through your life. (Matthew 5:13-14)

“You are the light of [Christ to] the world." He is the only way to return to the Father, and highlights the impact of personal testimony in bringing others to follow Jesus Christ. Christ is the light that shines in the darkness, the true light that has come to enlighten all people. Jesus is fully God and fully human and is our source of life and light.

Darkness has no power to extinguish even the faintest of lights. (John 1:5)
