Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet which was lowered into the sea, and gathered fish of every kind, and when it was full, they dragged it up on the beach; and they sat down and sorted out the good fish into baskets, but the worthless ones they threw away. So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw the wicked into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping [over sorrow and pain] and grinding of teeth [over distress and anger]. Jesus is saying, The Kingdom of God is moving like a kind of a net that moves silently through the sea of humanity. And trapping, capturing people into this net where they get to hear the Gospel, where they get to hear God's Word, when they are exposed to the kingdom.

We cannot know them by our own nature and abilities, but to them it has not been given. The understanding of them must be given by God through the preaching and teaching of the gospel of the kingdom.

Jesus will return one day to separate the 'good' fishes. from the 'bad' fishes ; those who believe and follow Jesus and those who don't. It is every follower's responsibility to spread the Good News. Follow me and I will make you fishers of men. Many early follower's were persecuted and forced to worship secretly. The fish symbol served as a secret form of communication.

The net is a powerful symbol also

that has many meanings: the net allows the fisherman to capture the fish, but the net is also where we can become entangled or the place where we can get in contact with others. The fish is related to Christ. Jesus told Peter (the first apostle), a fisherman by trade, that he would become a "fisher of men" if he were to follow Christ. For it's connection with Christ it has also come to embody resurrection and immortality, as well as the savior.
