The [reverent] fear of the LORD is the beginning (the prerequisite, the absolute essential, the alphabet) of wisdom; A good understanding and a teachable heart are possessed by all those who do the will of the LORD; His praise endures forever. (Psalm 111:10) The wise will hear and increase their learning,
And the person of understanding will acquire wise counsel and the skill [to steer his course wisely and lead others to the truth],
To understand a proverb and a figure [of speech] or an enigma with its interpretation,
And the words of the wise and their riddles [that require reflection].
The [reverent] fear of the LORD [that is, worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome] is the beginning and the preeminent part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; But arrogant fools despise [skillful and godly] wisdom and instruction and self-discipline. (Proverbs 1:5-7) But to man He said, ‘Behold, the reverential and worshipful fear of the Lord—that is wisdom; And to depart from evil is understanding. (Job 28:28)
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,
Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness,
Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes And understanding in their own sight! (Isaiah 5:210-21)
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the LORD [with reverent awe and obedience] and turn [entirely] away from evil.
It will be health to your body [your marrow, your nerves, your sinews, your muscles--all your inner parts]
And refreshment (physical well-being) to your bones. (Proverbs 3:7-8) Wisdom rests [silently] in the heart of one who has understanding, But what is in the heart of [shortsighted] fools is made known. (Proverbs 14:33)
A wise person's heart leads the right way. The heart of a fool leads the wrong way.
Furthermore, the way a fool lives shows he has no sense; he proclaims to everyone that he's a fool. (Ecclesiastes 10:2-3)
Every prudent and self-disciplined man acts with knowledge, But a [closed-minded] fool [who refuses to learn] displays his foolishness [for all to see].
An evil messenger brings mischief, But a wise messenger brings healing. (Proverbs 13:16-17)
The tongue of the wise speaks knowledge that is pleasing and acceptable, But the [babbling] mouth of fools blurts out foolishness. (Proverbs 15:2)
A shrewd man is reluctant to display his knowledge [until the proper time], But the heart of [over-confident] fools proclaims foolishness.(Proverbs 12:23) Stay away from a [shortsighted] fool, For you will not find knowledge or hear godly wisdom from his lips.
The wisdom of the shrewd person is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deception. (Proverbs 14:7-8) May the Lord preserve thee from all evil: the Lord shall keep thy soul. The Lord shall keep thy coming in, and thy going out, from henceforth and even for ever.(Psalm 121:7-8)
When all has been heard, the end of the matter is: fear God [worship Him with awe-filled reverence, knowing that He is almighty God] and keep His commandments, for this applies to every person. (Ecclesiastes 12:13)
